Okay, I know what happened…
The last episode that Buz is in, they still have the nice Corvette. Next episode it’s the butt-ugly one, and no Buz. So. Buz has been ill in hospital with a recurring illness. Finally they tell him it’s no good, it’s a, b or c and he’s going to die. So he withdraws all his half of the money from the joint bank account and he runs away to spare Tod the pain of seeing him die. But first he gets the new model Corvette (which Tod by some perversion has been lusting after) - he sleeps with the showroom owner’s daughter or something - and gets the new car, and leaves it outside their motel room and leaves the keys on Tod’s nightstand. He does a bunk with the old car, as the only thing he has to remember Tod by. Two years later, having recovered after all, he relocates Tod and they have a happy reunion.
